DAY 93: ME2 Appreciation
DAY 93
REAPER ETA: 8 Days

To follow up yesterday's ME1 appreciation, today we celebrate the second game in the Mass Effect trilogy!

What's your favourite part of ME2? How do you feel about the changes made to combat and game mechanics, like the introduction of more class-specific powers and Renegade/Paragon Interrupts? Lots of new characters were added to the series in this game--did you enjoy the heavily expanded team, or did you find the choices overwhelming? Do you have a favourite ME2 character?

Which ME2 choices do you hope to see reflected in ME3? Which ME2 characters do most want to see return?

What's your favourite part of ME2?

I have no one favorite part, so my top three (for various reasons):

1. The prologue. I was absolutely gobsmacked by what happened in it. It was an almost perfect 'teaser' to hook a player hard into the game, even, as I've found out, people who have never played it.

2. The Illusive Man. I have strong suspicions that he was, in fact, playing Shepard for the entirety of the game, but his explanations every time he's confronted by Shepard are so damn REASONABLE. I love how they wrote him as a character.

3. And for my completely shallow reason: I love the visual aesthetics of the game. From the lighting, cinematics, and colors to character designs. ME1 had some really pretty moments, but there were instances in ME2, especially in the cut scenes, where I wanted to be able to pause and get lost in the artistry of what I was seeing.

How do you feel about the changes made to combat and game mechanics, like the introduction of more class-specific powers and Renegade/Paragon Interrupts?

I LOVE INTERRUPTS. With a depth of feeling I cannot convey.

Most of the other changes, I'm still ambivalent about.

- The switch from unlimited ammo with the potential of overheats to ammo limits (mostly because I'm still scarred by running out of ammo during the second Reaper Larvae boss fight my first time through).
- I've mostly gotten over my resentment of the lack of omni-gel by the fact that I try to quick save before I do any kind of decryption in ME2, but I still don't like the 'one and done' approach to it.
- I hated the inventory management system in ME1 with a fiery passion. But I miss having any inventory in ME2.
- I liked the clear division of classes/powers in ME1. My brain likes to quantify things into the buckets the game itself has introduced. The fact that it's hard for me to do that with a lot of the squadmates in ME2 makes me cranky, especially with regards to trying to decide who to take on certain missions because their powers are now...irregular, for lack of a better term. (I.e., I can't say "I want to take an Infiltrator and a Vanguard with me" because their powers don't necessarily slot them nicely that way)

Lots of new characters were added to the series in this game--did you enjoy the heavily expanded team, or did you find the choices overwhelming?

I found the choices overwhelming. We only could carry two squadmates at a time, having up to twelve (with DLC) to choose from was inordinately excessive, especially since a lot of them overlapped in roles. (I know it made sense then in the Suicide Mission, but one could probably argue that the number of squaddies made the SM play out the way it did, rather than the reverse).

Ditto with the LIs. Options are nice, but I found the number of them too many to conceive of trying to explore all of them, especially if I wanted to keep ME1-faithful Shepards and I wasn't entirely happy with the demographics of it.

Do you have a favourite ME2 character?

Of the squaddies and only new to ME2...I think Legion, just because he took my first Shepard's hatred of the geth and turned it on its everliving head. The whole new story facet introduced by him, especially that late in the game (literally), blew me away.

Of the new NPCs introduced in ME2: probably Aria and TIM. I want to know more about both of them.

Re: 1/2

Which ME2 choices do you hope to see reflected in ME3?

The choices I want to see the consequences of are:

- If there's any influence one way or the other on the decision about David Archer at the end of Overlord. (My storytelling gut is saying that the wildly unpopular Renegade decision may, in fact, have a positive impact on the Galactic Readiness)
- Keeping or destroying Maelon's research
- The deaths of the ME2 squadmates
- Re-writing or destroying the heretic geth
- Protecting Tali's father from immediate public humiliation (and getting Tali's loyalty) vs. being upfront with the Admiralty Board of what Rael was doing. The post-mission letter seems to suggest there's a dual edged sword there in that decision, and that there may be an unavoidable bad outcome that will go with the 'good' one.

Which ME2 characters do most want to see return?

The new-to-ME2 LIs. I want them to have a larger role than just a cameo to the Shepards that romanced them, even if at the same time I recognize it may be a wholly unreasonable request given storytelling and programming limitations.

I want them to have the same significance and relevance as an LI introduced in ME1.
